Friday’s Fun Fact is about the beginning of summer. After the first day of summer 2012 last week, let’s talk about the importance of the solstice in creating our weather. The summer solstice is our longest period of daylight; from this point, until the winter solstice in late December, the days get shorter. This on-going, uneven cycle mean that our planet’s northern and southern hemisphere’s are heated unequally by the sun.

Here in the northern hemisphere, we receive more direct solar energy during the spring and summer months. The reason why the planet is tilted and creates the cycle is likely because something like a comet or asteroid struck our planet several billion years ago. It must have happened with great strength. The result is the seasons and our wide-ranging weather. Stay tuned to Fun Fact Friday because we’re counting down to the equinox!
